New Cherry Hospital ground breaking

Governor Perdue will be in Goldsboro in early October to break ground for the new Cherry Hospital, a project long discussed but has not been funded. It is designed to replace the current, aging facility in Wayne County. There are those saying that this is no time for the state to go deeper into debt to build this new hospital. When North Carolina is presumably facing a projected $3.3 billion shortfall next year the caution seems valid. Supporters counter that at least some people will be put to work, helping the economy, because of the new construction.

But all the while advocates for Dorothea Dix Hospital in Raleigh scratch their heads over the closure of the state's first and most important facility for mental health, especially as stories continue to fill the news about lack of beds for mentally ill patients.

Is there really a NC budget shortfall or is that what our NC politicians want us to believe so they can pocket their grab. It just makes me wonder why in just short of two years, NC seems to be broke and having to cut necessary programs that they had for years. Thank you. GTR
