Memo to N&O: Get Over It
North Carolina was slapped by tornadoes Saturday, with more than 21 lives lost, hundreds of millions dollars in damage and lives disrupted at a level we haven't seen since Hurricane Floyd yet The News and Observer is obsessed over where Governor Perdue was Saturday.
Here's the deal. Nobody knew just how bad these storms were going to be. The Governor is entitled to take some time off from time to time. She was in Kentucky, visiting her fellow Governor. They went to horse races. When she realized how bad the storms were going to be she made arrangements to get home. Her staff bungled the communications about where she was and why she was there. Case closed. Your own coverage was pretty thin, Sunday. Get over it and start covering the aftermath of the storm.

Tom, I'm a strong conservative and have no great affection for Bev Perdue. Still, I thought the same thing yesterday as Dome's blog posts continued to proliferate on the topic. Their fascination with the story felt a little too inside-baseball. With all of that said, however, remember our environment. Her predecessor was not open about his travels and we now know why -- and it wasn't for "security reasons." In fact, had it not been for the N&O's preoccupation with Easley's travel, he might still have a shred of a reputation, which he no longer had. So...I'm with you on the N&O yesterday on her whereabouts, but I don't fault them for asking. I will fault them, though, if they keep talking about it.
Keep up the good work with the program.

I agree that the N&O coverage was thin. However, with all the staff cutbacks, I assume that most of the "Sunday" paper has been finalized long before the tornado outbreak on Saturday. This is just the new reality of newspapers.
Unfortunately the tornado coverage did obscure a very nice series on environmental remediation that began Sunday in the N&O.

Please don't tell anyone I am defending a Democrat, but there must have been a dearth of news if all the News & Observer could find was Gov. Perdue taking some time off. One would think Colerain and Snow Hill had not been obliterated by tornadoes last Saturday.
